St. Joseph Parish was established on May 8, 1952, a year after the P.A. Roman Catholic School Division opened St. Joseph School and Father M. Reginald Theriault, O.P. was assigned temporary administrator of the future parish. Father Raymond M. Drouin, O.P. became the first pastor in January 1953.
The original St. Joseph Church, and its hall, was opened and blessed by Bishop Leo Blais on December 9, 1956. Father Luc Gaudet became the parish’s longest serving priest in January 1964, remaining here for almost twenty years. In July 1969, Walter Charpentier was named lay assistant.
Father Jean-Marie Boutin became the new pastor in June 1983. Two years later, the parish list showed 4,100 members, and a decision was made to build a new church and hall. The official sod-turning ceremony was performed August 11, 1987 and the first Sunday Liturgy was celebrated in the newly-constructed church July 10, 1988. Bishop Blaise Morand blessed the church at the official opening on November 20, 1988
Parishioner Louis Doderai was ordained a permanent deacon on November 11, 1989. He was the first married Roman Catholic in Saskatchewan to be ordained to this ministry; faithfully serving the parish and diocese until his resignation in October 2004.
Father Albert LeGatt was named pastor in August 1990 and served until July 1999. Ed McLeod was ordained to the permanent deaconate in July 1991, serving this parish before being transferred to St. Mark Parish. Later, Anne Marie Gobeil (Sharyk) was hired as pastoral assistant in August 1994, serving faithfully until December 2004.
Father Otto Dzodofe came to our parish in July 1999 on a two year sabbatical from Ghana. He was replaced by another Ghanaian priest, Father Ephraim Mensah, in August 2001.
On July 28, 2004 Father Matthew Nguyen was named as our pastor. Father Matthew is also the current Diocesan Vocation Director.
Sister Gertrude Gareau, a Sister of the Presentation of Mary, became our pastoral assistant in July 2005. That same month, Hilda Powell became chairperson of parish council. The parish thanks Betty Makelki for her service and dedication during seven years as parish council chairperson.
Julie McNay became chairperson of parish council in 2007 and a highlight for this year was the implementation of a diocesan directive to restore the order of the sacrament of initiations.
In 2009, new vision and mission statements were developed with the input of the parishioners. They are as follows: Vision: “A home away from home” and Mission: “To build and nurture a faithful, hopeful, and loving parish community.
Father Roque Concepcion became our new pastor in August 2011 and Father Matthew Nguyen, who had been with us for 7 years became the rector of the Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Arsene Billo became parish council chairperson in 2011 and the implementation of another major diocesan initiative “Our Living Covenant: The Responsible Ministry Protocol” was started.
The 60th anniversary as a parish was held on March 18, 2012 with a Eucharistic Celebration presided by the Most Reverend Albert Thévenot. Also present to celebrate with the parishioners were Bishop Emeritus Blaise Morand, Fr. Maurice Fiolleau, Fr. Matthew Nguyen and Fr. Roque Concepcion.
Over the years, the parish has participated in many diocesan programs and celebrations including: the diocese’s centennial in 1991, the Renew 2000 process from 1998-2000, the diocesan Eucharistic Congress in 2000, the Jubilee Year, a diocesan celebration for Father LeGatt as bishop-elect of Saskatoon in 2001, and the visit of the World Youth Day Cross in 2001.
